{"id":1171,"date":"2013-05-03T16:44:27","date_gmt":"2013-05-03T16:44:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nutrishield.com\/?p=1171"},"modified":"2016-11-22T15:53:42","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T15:53:42","slug":"can-we-cure-ageing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/?p=1171","title":{"rendered":"Can we cure ageing ?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Makoto Koto is head of the Division of Anti-Ageing and Longevity Science at the University of Yokohama.\u00a0 His fascinating argument on how and why we age can be summarised as follows.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Evolution has programmed us to be healthy long enough to reproduce and pass on our genes.<\/li>\n<li>To do that humans have evolved a sophisticated immune system that neutralises the frequent viral and bacterial (pathogen) attacks during the years before we have finished reproducing \u2013 ie have lived long enough to bring up children.<\/li>\n<li>An effective immune response unfortunately also triggers the release of pro-inflammatory proteins.<\/li>\n<li>So, each time the immune system overcomes a pathog<i>e<\/i>n, it can leave a legacy of low level inflammation. This sub-clinical (unnoticeable) inflammation builds up over the decades and is strongly linked to the development of heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, cognitive decline and some cancers.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">In other words the mechanism that keeps us healthy until we have passed on our genes \u2013 \u00a0(up to about age 50) &#8211; is the same mechanism that triggers disease in our later years. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Makoto Kota\u2019s conclusions are echoed by other researchers:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInflammation may be considered a core process of human ageing \u2026 and the major degenerative diseases of later life, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer\u2019s disease and cancer\u201d <b>Caleb E. Finch, Dept of Biological Sciences, USC College, University of Southern California<\/b><\/p>\n<p>Woody Allen once quipped:\u00a0 \u201cNobody wants to get older \u2013 but look at the alternative!\u201d But it\u2019s not getting older that\u2019s the problem \u2013 it is what sometimes comes with it.\u00a0 Luigi Ferrucci, chief of the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging says: \u201cIf you talk to many older people, what they are really desperate about is that they are going to be sick, dependent and have to rely on others.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But getting older doesn\u2019t have to be like that &#8211;<b> if<\/b> you act when you are younger. There are people who are slow agers \u2013 who defy the ageing process. Do they have a secret?\u00a0 These and other scientists now think so.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <b>Discover<\/b> magazine article by Kathleen McGowan\u2014entitled <i>\u201cCan We Cure Aging?\u201d<\/i>\u2014scientists in recent years \u201chave overturned much of the conventional wisdom about getting old.\u201d They now realize that aging \u201cis actually something our own bodies create, a side effect of the essential inflammatory system\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis (immune) inflammatory system is initially designed to protect us against infectious diseases . . . but as we fight off invaders, some residual inflammation usually remains, called chronic, sub-clinical inflammation\u201d. \u00a0\u2018Chronic\u2019 merely means continuous and \u2018sub-clinical\u2019 means undetected. The problem is that this chronic inflammation is not normally noticeable as it occurs at the cell level. But according to the Discover article it, \u201cinflicts collateral damage on ourselves, breaking down our own tissues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In other words we age.<\/p>\n<p>It logically follows that if we can reduce this residual inflammation, we should slow our aging and simultaneously reduce the risk of degenerative diseases like diabetes, dementia and heart disease. As Kathleen McGowan writes, tackling inflammation \u201cwould almost surely allow us to live better, increasing the odds that we could all spend our older age feeling\u00a0healthy, vibrant and vital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not something to worry about yet? The problem is that degenerative diseases \u2013 like heart disease, stroke and dementia do not occur overnight. They are the end result of success in warding off pathogen attacks in our earlier years and the consequent gradual increase in inflammation and tissue breakdown. These diseases typically develop over twenty years or more.
