When DNA is replicated as cells divide \u2013 and that happens about 50 billion times a day! \u2013 the information might not always be copied correctly. And damaged DNA can lead to mutated cells and on to cancer (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.icr.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-achievements\/our-scientific-discoveries\/dna-damage-and-cancer\">Ref.)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Moreover, DNA is also under attack from numerous outside sources, including UV radiation, oxidative stress (free radical damage), environmental hazards, and dietary carcinogens (things in your food that cause cancer).<\/p>\n<p>Dietary carcinogens include <em><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">processed meats<\/span><\/em> (like hot dogs and bacon), raw <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>meats cooked at high temperatures<\/em><\/span> (above 300\u00b0C)<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>and <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><em>acrylamides<\/em><\/span> \u2013 formed when sugars and starches are cooked at a high temperature, in for example potato crisps\/chips or French fries.<\/p>\n<p><img  title=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-10650\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DNA-damage-AS-600x400-1-300x200.jpg\"  alt=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\"  width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DNA-damage-AS-600x400-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DNA-damage-AS-600x400-1-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/DNA-damage-AS-600x400-1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On average, we suffer thousands of hits to our DNA a day! So, some DNA damage is inevitable, but the extent to which DNA damage can be prevented and repaired correlates closely with how long we will live (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/ejhg2013299\">Ref.<\/a>).\u00a0 Mutations resulting from DNA damage that are not repaired are a significant cancer risk.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that we have effective mechanisms in our bodies that repair DNA. If we didn\u2019t, we would die before 20, because cell turnover and DNA copying is on a huge, continuous scale from birth onwards.<\/p>\n<p>But inevitably these DNA replication errors are not always caught and as a result, genetic damage accumulates, and cells therefore can break down and lose function or even turn cancerous.<\/p>\n<p>So, scientists are working on drugs to improve the mechanism that repairs DNA. And we already know that Vitamin B3 as nicotinamide (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20725615\/\">Ref.<\/a>) and certain phyto-nutrients (plant nutrients) can do that, too.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-14418-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-14418-1\" ><div id=\"pgc-14418-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-14418-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>Colin Rose is a Senior Associate Member of the Royal Society of Medicine, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. Because plants face even greater risks to their DNA than animals do \u2013 since they can\u2019t move to prevent solar or insect damage or to seek shade or water when DNA-threatening environmental stress sets in.<\/p>\n<p>So, many plants are naturally rich in biochemical DNA-protective compounds. Indeed, in a trial, lemon juice cut DNA damage by a third (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/pdf\/10.1271\/bbb.60224\">Ref.<\/a>) and a sub-test showed it was not the vitamin C that had the effect.<\/p>\n<p><img  title=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-14421\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/lemon-300x209.jpg\"  alt=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\"  width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/lemon-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/lemon.jpg 349w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Curcumin<\/strong> from turmeric \u2013 and its cousin <strong>ginger<\/strong> \u2013 are particularly powerful protectors of DNA (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/11398177\/\">Ref.)<\/a>\u00a0 BBC\u2019s Dr Michael Mosely recently teamed up with the Universities of Newcastle and University College London to test the effect of turmeric (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/articles\/PSTGKKt3HR08tmK69w7J1b\/does-turmeric-really-help-protect-us-from-cancer\">Ref.<\/a>), which contains curcumin. They found that turmeric helped modify the way that certain genes worked, resulting in improved DNA protection.<\/p>\n<p>Curcumin helps protect DNA in a second way. It stimulates the body\u2019s own production of a protein called glutathione (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15650394\/\">Ref.<\/a>). Glutathione is a highly potent antioxidant and used by cells and DNA in their defence against oxidative stress \u2013 free radical damage.<\/p>\n<p>You should note that turmeric typically contains only about 3% curcumin and even that is poorly absorbed, whereas a good curcumin supplement will be 98% curcumin.<\/p>\n<p><img  title=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-13786\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/turmeric-root-slices-powder-CR-Oct21-300x200.jpg\"  alt=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\"  width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/turmeric-root-slices-powder-CR-Oct21-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/turmeric-root-slices-powder-CR-Oct21-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/turmeric-root-slices-powder-CR-Oct21.jpg 616w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other nutrients that support glutathione production \u2013 which otherwise declines with age \u2013 are <strong>sulphur<\/strong> (found in green vegetables like kale, Brussels sprouts, watercress and in onions and garlic) and <strong>selenium<\/strong> (high in Brazil nuts, fish and seafood).<\/p>\n<p>Other DNA protective compounds include <strong>vitamin C<\/strong>, and the herbs <strong>parsley <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5024025\/\">Ref.<\/a>), <strong>rosemary <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4749867\/\">Ref.<\/a>) and thyme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-14418-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-14418-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-14418-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><!-- wp:image {\"id\":8961,\"align\":\"center\",\"linkDestination\":\"custom\"} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:html --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<h2><strong>DNA Repair<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>DNA <u>protection<\/u> is only half the story. You need to support your body\u2019s ability to <strong><u>repair<\/u><\/strong> DNA. Studies in the <em>British Journal of Nutrition<\/em> and other science journals shows that the <strong>carotenoids<\/strong> \u2013 beta carotene, lycopene and lutein \u2013 have a major role to play in DNA repair (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14748939\/\">Ref.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jn\/article\/135\/8\/2071S\/4664044\">Ref.<\/a>), as does <strong>nicotinamide\u00a0<\/strong>(vitamin B3).<\/p>\n<p>Carotenoids have all-round importance. A huge study involving 6,958 people over 50, called the <em>Third Nutrition and Health Examination Survey <\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.0050012\">Ref.<\/a>), showed that higher blood levels of <strong>lycopene<\/strong> (the nutrient that makes tomatoes red) and <strong>lutein<\/strong>\/<strong>zeaxanthin<\/strong> (in leafy green vegetables) are correlated with a lower risk of Alzheimer\u2019s and Alzheimer\u2019s mortality.<\/p>\n<p><img  title=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-8745\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fruit-and-veg-carotenes-F-300x224.jpg\"  alt=\"The right nutrients can protect your DNA for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\"  width=\"300\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fruit-and-veg-carotenes-F-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/fruit-and-veg-carotenes-F.jpg 401w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Other plant compounds that support DNA repair include grapeseed extract (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-022-16608-2\">Ref.<\/a>), \u00a0green tea extract (<a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/PMC\/PMC6405770\">Ref.<\/a>)\u00a0 and curcumin (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-16436-9\">Ref.<\/a>) So curcumin not only helps protect DNA, but it also helps repair it.<\/p>\n<p>A theme in ageing research is how all the drivers of ageing are connected. The following illustration is an example. The blue line shows the reduction in NAD levels over time. NAD is the vital molecule that drives energy production that we looked at in <a href=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/protecting-mitochondria-leads-to-longer-healthier-life\/\"><u>the first article<\/u> on slowing ageing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The red line is the increase in DNA damage over time. Phyto-nutrients that help <strong>protect<\/strong> DNA include resveratrol (found in blueberries, and in bilberry and grapeseed extracts), lemon juice and zest, quercetin, fisetin (highest in strawberries), chlorophyllin, curcumin plus vitamin C.<\/p>\n<p>DNA <strong>repair<\/strong> is supported by nicotinamide (vitamin B3) and the carotenoids beta carotene, lutein and lycopene.<\/p>\n<p>Plant supplements that support repair include grapeseed extract and green tea extract.
