They eventually stop dividing, at which point they should naturally enter what is called \u2018programmed cell death\u2019 or technically, <em>apoptosis<\/em>. Their components are then ready to be recycled to make new cells.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes damage makes them become resistant to this normal and \u2018cleansing\u2019 death. They turn into something scientists call <strong>senescent cells<\/strong> or <strong>\"zombie cells\"<\/strong>, which pour out toxins that infect other cells in their vicinity and spread ageing inflammation throughout the body.<\/p>\n<p>Senescent cells can be thought of as 'cellular waste'. They accumulate with time and age \u2013 and cause wrinkles. Senescent cells in blood vessels make them stiffer and can lead to arthritis, atherosclerosis or to inflammation in the brain. Which is why excess senescent cells are associated with Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists have found that eliminating senescent cells in old mice reverses many of the effects of ageing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/senolytic-drugs-reverse-damage-caused-senescent-cells-mice\">Ref.<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24848057\/\">Ref.<\/a>)\u00a0 Several drugs called <em>senolytics<\/em> are now being developed (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31077707\/\">Ref.<\/a>)<sup>\u00a0<\/sup>with the goal of reducing senescent cells in older people to delay and treat age-related disease. They work by increasing \u2018autophagy\u2019 \u2013 a natural process where old cells are broken down and recycled. (Auto=self and phagy=eating)<\/p>\n<p>Studies have also identified several phyto (plant) nutrients that act as <em>natural<\/em> senolytics.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-14436-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-14436-1\" ><div id=\"pgc-14436-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-14436-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800080;\"><em>Colin Rose is a Senior Associate Member of the Royal Society of Medicine, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. (Anti-angiogenic means the ability to starve cancer cells of the blood supply they need to proliferate).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Other studies indicate that fisetin can enhance memory in mice. A 2018 study from researchers at the <em>Mayo Clinic<\/em> and the <em>Center on Aging at the Scripps Institute<\/em> found it \u201c<em>extends health and lifespan\u201d<\/em> \u2013 at least in mice and in human tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Fisetin is therefore desirable in your diet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>GRAPESEED EXTRACT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not the only natural phyto-nutrient that helps clear senescent cells. In December 2021 <em>Nature Metabolism<\/em> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s42255-021-00491-8\">Ref.<\/a>) \u00a0identified procyanidin C1 \u2013 a key nutrient in <strong>grapeseed extract<\/strong> \u2013 as:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\"a natural seno-therapeutic agent with in vivo activity and high potential for further development as a clinical intervention to delay, alleviate or prevent age-related pathologies.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img  title=\"Clear zombie cells for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6916\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/grape-seeds-300x288.jpg\"  alt=\"Clear zombie cells for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\"  width=\"300\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/grape-seeds-300x288.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/grape-seeds-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/grape-seeds-450x433.jpg 450w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/grape-seeds.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The study confirmed that this grapeseed phyto-nutrient \u201c<em>alleviates physical dysfunction and prolongs survival\u201d<\/em> in old mice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>QUERCETIN, CURCUMIN and GREEN TEA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another natural senolytic is <strong>quercetin<\/strong> (highest in apples, capers, red onions, berry fruits, kale, spinach and grapes). Quercetin has been found to help clear senescent cells from the lining of arteries (<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33860002\/\">Ref.<\/a>) and therefore improve cardio and brain function.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Curcumin <\/strong>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6518239\/\">Ref.<\/a>), and the compound called EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) in <strong>green tea<\/strong> are other senolytics.<\/p>\n<p><img  title=\"Clear zombie cells for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6917\" src=\"https:\/\/nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-300x298.jpg\"  alt=\"Clear zombie cells for longer healthier life NutriShield Multi Vitamins and Minerals\"  width=\"300\" height=\"298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-300x298.jpg 300w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-80x80.jpg 80w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-768x764.jpg 768w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-1030x1024.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-36x36.jpg 36w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-180x180.jpg 180w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-1500x1491.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-705x701.jpg 705w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-120x120.jpg 120w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea-450x447.jpg 450w, https:\/\/staging.nutrishield.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/green-tea.jpg 1924w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Fisetin, quercetin, grape seed extract and curcumin are also powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds and so have additional value (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6572624\/\">Ref.<\/a>) .<\/p>\n<p>The lead Mayo Clinic researcher on fisetin made an important point to remember when we consider what supplements to take to counteract the processes that drive ageing \u2013 and age-related illnesses:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\"Polyphenols like fisetin and those in blueberry extracts (resveratrol) are found in fruits and vegetables and are related to each other chemically ... <\/em><em><strong>There is increasing evidence that they all work in combination against multiple diseases<\/strong>.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>No one nutrient \u2013 even Vitamin D3 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4399494\/\">Ref.<\/a>) \u2013 is going to make a huge difference on its own. The aim is to identify the <u>combination<\/u> that is likely to be maximally effective \u2013 which is the purpose of this Slower Ageing series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-14436-3\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-14436-3-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-14436-3-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p><!-- wp:image {\"id\":8961,\"align\":\"center\",\"linkDestination\":\"custom\"} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:html --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:heading {\"level\":3} --><\/p>\n<p><strong>GLUCOSAMINE - surprisingly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the Scripps Institute researching glucosamine for joint health found that one of the ways it works is by supporting the elimination of senescent cells. They concluded that glucosamine be considered for <em>\u201cmodifying aging-related cellular changes<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Glucosamine is normally an ingredient in joint supplements. But in another study, glucosamine was found \u2013 to the researchers' (and my) surprise \u2013 to be associated with reduced overall mortality (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3557824\/\">Ref<\/a>.).<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPERMIDINE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another newly discovered senolytic is spermidine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6128428\/\">Ref.<\/a>), a nutrient found in the highest concentrations in wheatgerm. If you eat wholegrain wheat flour products eg. wholegrain bread, wholegrain pasta, you will get all the components of the whole grain: wheat bran, endosperm, and wheatgerm. Wheatgerm can also be added separately to, for instance, breakfast cereals.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:heading --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-14436-3-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"4\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2><strong>Summary \u2013 How to clear zombie cells<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The older we get, the more senescent cells we produce and accumulate. Uncleared senescent cells are a key contributor to ageing.
