Read labels carefully<\/h3>\n

I\u2019ve got two top-selling “daily” multi-nutrient nutritional supplements in front of me.<\/p>\n

BRAND A<\/h5>\n

\"Supplement<\/a>One announces: \u2018Lutein helps maintain healthy eyes\u2019<\/strong>. That\u2019s true, it does. And it’s a “health claim” permitted to be reproduced on a food label.<\/p>\n

But when I check the level, it says:<\/p>\n

Lutein: 250<\/span> \u00b5<\/a><\/span>g<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Now \u00b5<\/a><\/span>g stands for microgram<\/u> <\/span>(the other abbreviation is mcg<\/span>). So that means there are 250 micrograms of lutein in their formula.<\/p>\n

We have examined hundreds of research papers on lutein.<\/p>\n

The conclusion is that the level of lutein needed to protect eye health is at least 6 mg<\/strong><\/span> or 6 milligrams<\/u><\/span> a day.<\/p>\n

There are 1,000 mcg in 1 mg.<\/p>\n

So the optimum level is indicated as 6,000 mcg<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what we put in NutriShield Premium<\/p>\n

So the brand offering 250 mcg has 40 times LESS<\/em> than research indicates is an optimum daily amount. And 40 times less<\/em> than the level in NutriShield Premium.<\/p>\n

BRAND B<\/h5>\n

\"Supplement<\/a>The other brand is designed for women over 50, with a separate version for men over 50.<\/p>\n

They both contain 2 mg of Co-Q10<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Co-Q10\u00a0 or Co-enzyme Q10 is a valuable \u2018heart healthy\u2019 nutrient \u2013 it is a powerful anti-oxidant that supports energy production in the mitochondria.<\/p>\n

Levels do decline with age, so a supplement makes sense.<\/p>\n

But research indicates that you need at least 30 mg<\/strong><\/span> of Co-Q10 to get a health effect.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what we put in NutriShield Premium.<\/p>\n

And what they DON’T include at all …<\/h4>\n

Neither brand includes Omega 3, nor curcumin, nor lycopene.<\/p>\n

Now lutein, lycopene and curcumin are expensive ingredients but with extensive evidence for health protective effects. And Omega 3 needs to be put in a separate capsule at a level of 1,000mg a day.<\/p>\n

All that costs money. But I believe that supplements must be driven by science, not what looks good on a pack.<\/p>\n
