It is especially needed in those organs with a higher energy requirement \u2013 like the liver, pancreas, kidneys and especially the heart. It\u2019s not designated a vitamin, as all animals and humans can make small amounts of CoQ10 on their own without food.<\/p>\n<p>The mitochondria \u2013 the tiny \u2018energy factories\u2019 inside almost every body cell \u2013 need CoQ10, along with B vitamins, to turn other nutrients from food into useable energy.<\/p>\n<h3>CoQ10 for heart health as anti-oxidant<\/h3>\n<p>Coenzyme Q10 is important as a heart health nutrient. It is an anti-oxidant that helps circulatory health and reduce the potentially damaging oxidation (free radical damage) of LDL (bad) cholesterol.<\/p>\n<p>Supplements of Q10 have been shown to reduce blood pressure significantly and help ensure that heart muscles stay strong.<\/p>\n<p>In patients with actual heart failure, a 2015 study in the<em> Journal of American Cardiology <\/em>found that \u2013 in addition to conventional therapy \u2013<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cQ10 supplementation improves symptoms; improves survival; and reduces hospitalization rate\u201d.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The average Western diet delivers about 10-15mg of CoEnzyme Q10 a day, but the indications are that you need at least 30mg a day for optimal heart health.<\/p>\n<p>You may need more if you are taking statins, which deplete the body of CoQ10 by blocking the body\u2019s ability to synthesise it.<\/p>\n<p>The body&#8217;s ability to make its own CoQ10 does decline with age \u2013 unfortunately just at the time that the need for both anti-oxidants and energy increases.<\/p>\n<p>CoQ10 deficiency as a result of statin therapy can show up in symptoms that include fatigue and aching joints.<\/p>\n<p>Deficiency is also associated with cardiovascular problems, which can include angina, arrhythmia and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n<p>There is some evidence that it may make the anti-coagulant warfarin less effective.<\/p>\n<h3>CoQ10 for the brain and as anti-inflammatory<\/h3>\n<p>There is also some indication that Q10 deficiency is linked to declining cognitive powers \u2013 as the brain is also energy hungry. Diabetic patients may also become deficient in CoQ10.<\/p>\n<p>Co-Enzyme Q10 works with other nutrients \u2013 it helps recycle vitamin C and E, which increases the anti-oxidant impact of all three.<\/p>\n<p>Recent research also indicates that CoQ10 triggers the expression of genes that have an anti-inflammatory effect.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Co-Q10 food sources<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>As mentioned, the body can make CoQ10, but needs it from the diet too, particularly in older age.<\/p>\n<p>By far the richest food sources per gram are the internal organs of fish and animals. Nuts and soy are on a par with more regularly consumed meats such as chicken breasts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fish (herring, mackerel, sardines, tuna), particularly their hearts.<em> Typically tuna, herring 1.5mg\/100g for flesh; 12mg\/100g for heart.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Meat (especially grass-fed beef and free-range chicken), particularly liver and heart. <em>Chicken liver 11.6mg\/100g, chicken breast 2mg\/100g.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Nuts and seeds \u2013 peanuts, pistachios, walnuts and sesame seeds. <em>Peanuts 2.67mg\/100g, rest 2mg to 1.5mg\/100g.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Fruits and vegetables \u2013 soybeans and soy products, avocado, broccoli. <em>Soybeans 1.9mg\/100g, avocado 1mg, broccoli 0.6mg.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Grains \u2013 corn germ, rice bran, wheat germ. <em>0.7mg to 0.4mg\/100g.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Food supplements <em>eg. NutriShield Premium 30mg per daypack.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Main benefits of C0-Enzyme Q10<\/h3>\n<h4>CoQ10 reduces blood pressure<\/h4>\n<p>A meta-analysis (a summary of many of clinical trials) published in the <em>Journal of Human Hypertension<\/em> found that CoQ10 supplements were able to significantly lower both systolic and diastolic blood pressure \u2013 by over 17 and 10 points respectively.<\/p>\n<h4>CoQ10 sustains energy<\/h4>\n<p>CoQ10 is a vital part of the process that creates energy (the molecule ATP) within mitochondria. So optimum levels help increase energy and preserve muscle mass.<\/p>\n<h4>CoQ10 is an anti-oxidant that reduces free radical damage<\/h4>\n<p>Oxidative damage \u2013 free radical damage \u2013 is deeply implicated in both the ageing process itself and certain illnesses that are linked to getting older, like cognitive decline, heart disease and DNA damage that can lead to cancer.<\/p>\n<p>As an anti-oxidant, CoQ10 will work with other anti-oxidants like Omega 3, vitamins C and E, carotenoids, curcumin, zinc, selenium and manganese to help counter oxidation.<\/p>\n<p>The anti-oxidant role of CoQ10 means that it can help sustain heart health.
